However note that detection of the system theme is not always available or correct. I agree this is how it should work when Firefox's "default" theme is chosen, and that this should be the default for Firefox. (In reply to Andrew Kelley from comment #19) I don't really see the need to change the current default. They would enable Dark Mode or it would be auto-enabled (based on things like time or sunset), but Firefox would stay in light mode, giving away the impression of an outdated application without dark mode support.

Normal users would try some of the other themes and Dark Mode support in FF would apparently break. Users of the the Firefox Developer Edition for example, just because it has a dark theme as default, would get a really different web experience than users of the other versions. This doesn't sound smart, it is contrary to how Dark Mode works everywhere else across all other apps.Ī hidden about:config option for this is fine, but it should not be default. As a user it was completely surprising that I could have "dark" theme selected while prefers-color-scheme reported "light". It seems clear to me that this setting should affect prefers-color-scheme media query. For Firefox's UI itself, there is an easy workaround: select the dark theme in Firefox. On my system - XFCE with a dark theme - Firefox incorrectly determines that this is a light theme.

Setting the Firefox theme doesn't seem like something that would change the experience of website content. It seems light/dark mode is something the user should set for the OS, knowing that setting will affect interfaces and content throughout their experience.

I come at this with the perspective of a user - so take my ignorance of Firefox internals as both unique insight as well as obliviousness to practicality.
Firefox dark theme homepage update#
It could create a lot of confusion to update Firefox, and suddenly some sites have dark background and light text. So would we ship Firefox defaulting all websites to dark mode? Or would we change Firefox's default to the light theme? It seems like a severe choice to default (any website that has a dark mode) to dark mode, even for users who have not set dark mode in their OS, and likely haven't even heard of dark mode. Īnother thought - currently Firefox defaults to the dark toolbar, the dark theme. (We want to debate this from the point of view of the users, not the technical perspective of the browser engine.)īut actually, I don't know what web designers would think of this, so I asked the question in a Tweet (super-unscientific-research).
